The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless.
Each child in the Windham Area is welcome to join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program (1kBBK)! The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your child starts kindergarten. To get started, sign up with us by visiting the Nesmith Library (ask at the Children's Desk when you come to storytime, or another of our fun programs). Read 100 books together, then visit the library to pick out a prize from the treasure chest, and start on your next 100 books! Keep going until you have completed the challenge!

Caregivers have a variety of options for keeping track of books read as part of the 1kBBk challenge!
- Track Reading On Your Computer: Download reading log sheets from the official 1000 Books Before Kindergarten (1kBBK) Resources, and type your titles in the PDF forms! Bring a flash drive to the library if you would like help downloading and saving the reading logs. There are reading logs for the first 100 titles, the second 100 titles, the third 100 titles, etc., all the way up to 1000!
- Track Reading On Paper: Print the reading log sheets from the official 1000 Books Before Kindergarten (1kBBK) Resources, and fill them in as you read. The library will not keep the paper reading logs once they are completed, but caregivers are welcome to do so! Please visit us at the library if you would like help printing the reading logs.
- Track Reading In the App: 1kBBK has an app for Apple and Android phones and other devices, which you can download and use to track your childrens' reading! Search for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten in the app store on your device to get started. You will sign up for an account within the app using an email address. The app has features allowing you to search for the book read or type in your own titles. Visit the app instructions on the 1kBBK website for more details.
In May or early June, we will have a party for all participants! You do not need to have finished your 1000 books to be part of the celebration, everyone pursuing the challenge is welcome to join us. We will have special treats to congratulate those who have finished their 1000 Books during the year!

Newsletter: Every new 1kBBK registrant will have their name put in our monthly library newsletter, along with those who have reached 200, 500, and 1000 Books!
Display: For each set of books read, we will put a new symbol on the 1kBBK display wall. For example, 1000 Books is a star! Visit the Childrens Room at the library or follow us on social media to watch as the wall gets decorated!
