NESMITH LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES

September 11, 2001

 

PRESENT: J Gross, Chairman; Shirley Beaulieu, Vice-Treasurer; Mary Lee Underhill, Secretary; Rich Koeck, Member; Pat Skinner, Member.

EXCUSED: Murray Levin, Vice-Chairman; Holly Eddy, Treasurer.

 

ATTENDEES: John Barrett, Director; Marija Sanderling, Assistant Director; Lois Freeston, staff; Diane Mayr, staff.

 

J Gross called the meeting to order at 7:10PM. The board observed a moment of silence prior to beginning the business meeting.

 

MINUTES: Upon motion by Pat Skinner, second by Shirley Beaulieu, the Board voted to accept the minutes of the August 14, 2001 meeting as written.

 

DIRECTOR’S REPORT: John Barrett reported that 10,856 items were in circulation in August. There are 6,313 registered patrons. Volunteers logged 120.25 hours in August bringing the year-to-date total to 855.25 volunteer hours. The entryway counter showed that 7,703 patrons visited the library in August. There were 118 internet users in August.

 

John reported that a year 2002 initial budget has been prepared.

 

John reported that Adult Services/Collection Development Librarian Diane Mayr has recently had her first picture book published.

 

John reviewed a list of ongoing maintenance issues with the Board. John is in daily contact with those who will be engraving and placing the rock at the driveway entrance.

 

John reported that the first Zucchini Festival week was a huge success.  John thanked Diane Mayr for organizing the event.

 

John invited the Board to stop in at the Historical Room to view the newly hung coverlet donated by the Windham Women’s Club.

 

John reported that FLOW will make one final presentation prior to beginning work on the Children’s Room Enhancement Project in October.

 

Banned Book week will be celebrated September 22nd - 29th at the library.

 

The Windham Flute Ensemble will perform at the library on September 30th at 7pm.

 

J Gross thanked John for his thorough report. The Director’s Report was placed on file.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The Board discussed the successful 2nd annual Driving for Books Golf Tournament which took place in August. The Board anticipates a financial report from the event at the next meeting.

 

Mary Lee Underhill presented several drafts of library mission statements for the Board to consider. Mary Lee asked all Trustees to e-mail their suggestions and preferences to her prior to the next meeting.

 

NEW BUSINESS: J Gross presented plans from the Windham Garden Club for a low maintenance gardening project proposed for the entrance area triangle. The project will be donated to the library in memory of Nancy Surrette.

 

Upon motion by Pat skinner, second by Mary Lee Underhill, the Board voted to approve the Windham Garden Club project.

 

John Barrett and Marija Sanderling presented a draft of a brochure they are developing which will highlight the library’s services.

 

John Barrett and Marija Sanderling reported that volunteer Bruce Mathewson has completed the vast project of indexing the Windham Independent.

 

Upon motion by Rich Koeck, second by Mary Lee Underhill, the Board voted to enter Non-Public Session to discuss personnel in accordance with RSA 91-A:3. J Gross polled the Board: Pat Skinner, yes; Mary Lee Underhill, yes; Rich Koeck, yes; Shirley Beaulieu, yes; J Gross, yes.

 

NON-PUBLIC SESSION ACTION TAKEN: On issue one, the Board voted to approve grade/step increases resulting from the director annual review. The action passed unanimously.

 

On issue two, no action was taken.

 

The next regular Trustees meeting will be held at the Nesmith Library on Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at 7pm.
