The Year of the Dragon

The Nesmith Library will hold a

Chinese New Year Celebration

on Saturday, January 28th at 1:00pm.

Unlike previous years, PRE-REGISTRATION is required.

This program geared towards school aged children and their families.

(Recommended for children ages 5 and up)

Following a brief introduction and history of the holiday, entertainment will begin with a performance by the Youth Eastern String Troupe.  Established in 2008 under the direction by Mr. Lin, an award winning professional musician and music educator from China, the Youth Eastern String Troupe was established with the goal of increasing the general public's knowledge and appreciation for the Erhu instrument.  It is a beautiful and moving instrument.

To celebrate the start of the New Year, other highlights of the program will be a martial arts demonstration and a Taiwanese Lion Dance performed in full costume.  Children will be able to participate in making simple crafts to bring home and red envelopes will be handed out at the end of the program.  Small samplings of candies, tea, and appetizers have been donated by local restaurants including a donation of oranges from the Shaw’s in Windham.  Tangerines and oranges are passed out freely during Chinese New Year to symbolize “luck and wealth”.  The Nesmith Library greatly appreciates all of these contributions to assist in making this program possible.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SPACE IS LIMITED AND REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED THIS YEAR.  Stop by the front circulation desk or call the library to reserve a spot.  This program will take place in the multi-purpose room and begins at 1:00pm.  If you have any questions or would like more information, contact the library at 432-7154 and ask for Jane McCue.
